By default Windows 2003 Server doesn't include drivers for any of the Aureal soundcards. However, Microsoft has recently released drivers onto Windows Update which have the same functionality as the Windows XP Windows Update drivers. It is recommended that you install these first, then if you have a Windows XP CD, you can install those drivers afterwards (since they provide hardware acceleration etc.)
Go to the Windows Update site and go to Windows Update Catalog. If this is not enabled, then you will need to enable it through the Personalize Windows Update link.
On the next screen that appears, click on the Find driver updates for hardware devices link
Then click on Sound and in the next screen select Microsoft Corporation for the Manufacturer and Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition for the Operating system. Click Search.
At the top of the list there should be a driver called Aureal Semiconductor Multifunction Driver Version 5.2.3633.0, download size 347KB. Click Add and then Go to Download Basket. Follow the instructions to download the file to a folder of your choice.
Next, you need to extract the driver from the .CAB file into it's own directory, it doesn't matter where. Make a note of where you installed it to though.
You can either install the Windows 2003 Server driver at this point (Step 3) or you can follow the first part of Step 4, and then apply the method used in Step 3 to install the Windows XP driver. Alternatively just follow through Step 3 and Step 4 logically and update the driver.
Check in Device Manager and see if there is an Unknown Multimedia Device (it could be called Unknown Multifunction Device). Or use your own judgement (as I've said I don't have Win2K3) and Uninstall (Remove) it. Don't just Disable it.
Upon next reboot, it should redetect it but it won't be able to find drivers. Choose the Advanced driver installation method, don't let it search automatically at any point! Go into the Other Devices category and then click Have Disk. Point it to the folder where you extracted the driver. It should then proceed to install a Multifunction PCI Device, Aureal AU88x0 Audio and Aureal Gameport.
First of all you'll need to extract the driver from the XP CD-ROM. Put the CD-ROM in your drive and go into the \i386 directory. Double click on the Driver.cab file and extract the following into a new folder:
You will also require the INF files, which can downloaded from here. Put this in the same folder as the driver files.
Once you've got all the necessary files, go into Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. Double click on Aureal Vortex AU88x0 Audio (WDM), then on the Driver tab, followed by the Update Driver button. Choose Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click Next. Then choose Don't search, I will choose the driver to install. Click Have Disk and point it to the new drivers.
Wait for installation to finish and then install the Vortex Control Panel from here.
